A former Eurovision venue is set to host to around 400 Ukrainian refugees over the next few days.

Development Officer with IRD Duhallow, Louise Bourke told RedFM News that the Green Glens Arena in Millstreet has been converted into a so-called Temporary Reception Centre.

The Duhallow region of North Cork will then be home to around 500 Ukrainian refugees.

The village of Banteer welcomed 46 mainly women and children from the war-ravaged country on Saturday.

Local community organisations have issued urgent appeals for basic provisions such as clothes, bedding and toys.

All donations are being processed in the James O'Keeffe Institure in Newmarket, where people can also volunteer their time.

Food donations are not needed at present.

Speaking to RedFM News, Louise said that the local community has been extremely generous, but the number of people arriving in a short time means more supplies are urgently needed.

"They have completely kitted out the Green Glens Arena in Millstreeet, and they will be arriving there in the coming days.

"We badly need clothes, as you can imagine we have 500 refugees in a very small area.

"People have been amazing in donating so much, but it's just the volume coming in, with close to 400 coming into Millstreet."
