An Independent TD has predicted fuel prices could reach €3.50 a litre without further Government intervention.
A number of TDs have written to the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission this morning asking them to investigate.
Independent TD and former head of the Irish Road Haulage Association Verona Murphy says excise needs to be entirely removed from fuel for a temporary period.
"Without excise we would be looking at a forecourt price of about €1.50 a litre if we with the $200 a barrel mark.
"If we don't take this measure, and Government haven't taken any steps to ameliorate that, we will see the prices at the forecourts in the coming weeks rise to about €3.50 a litre."
