The trial is getting underway in Greece today of an Irishman accused of a range of offences related to people smuggling and spying.

Seán Binder is one of 24 migrant rescue volunteers who are being prosecuted for helping people at risk of drowning in the sea off Lesbos in 2018.

Amnesty International says the case is a farce and wants the charges dropped.

Spokesperson, Adriana Tidona, says assisting people on the shoreline is not a crime.

"Amnesty international believes that these charges are completely unfounded. And the prosecution itself is based on an abusive interpretation of of the law.

"Therefore, we have called for the charges to be dropped and think that this case shouldn't shouldn't have been brought in the first place."
