The parents of Madeleine McCann believe the identification of a German suspect is "the most significant development in 13 years".
The 43-year-old - who hasn't been named - is currently in jail in his home country.
Madeleine vanished in Portugal shortly before her fourth birthday and would have turned 17 last month.
Her family's spokesperson - Clarence Mitchell - says Kate and Gerry McCann need closure.
"They are realistic - they simply want to know what happened to their daughter.
"That's always been the case - they want whoever was responsible for her disappearance to be brought to justice.
"They do remain hopeful that she could be found alive, they've never given up on that hope and nor will they."
