They're expected to rise by 164 per cent in Ireland to more than 142 thousand.
The Lancet report highlights risk factors like smoking and low levels of education.
Des O'Neill, professor of medical gerontology at Trinity College Dublin, explains what areas need to be tackled to stop cases rising:
"We now know there's a range of factors that actually have helped to lower the amount of us in many European countries and the USA. And these include education, exercise, diabetes, obesity and alcohol consumption."
