Former Pope Benedict XVI will be laid to rest today.
The historic ceremony will take place in the surrounds of St. Peter's Square in the Vatican.
It's a rare occurrence for a current pope to preside over the funeral mass of his predecessor - with Benedict the first Pontiff to resign in 600 years.

"In terms of theology and his academic contribution to the life of the church it's enormous, people will be reading his theology for years to come.
"He is a man of Vatican II, I suppose in terms of later controversies you could argue otherwise, but I think there's a complexity there that people might acknowledge and understand as well in terms of who the man was."
