Residents in the Ukrainian capital have been encouraged to grab weapons to defend the city, with Russian forces just a few miles away.

Gunfire and explosions have been heard through the day.

The mayor of Kyiv says the city’s now entered a defensive phase, with civilians asked to make Molotov cocktails and take on invading troops.

A Ukrainian defence minister claims forces from Russia have lost almost 3-thousand personnel during the invasion.

Moscow says it's seized a strategic airport near Kyiv.

More troops are being sent by NATO to countries around Ukraine - but they won't enter the country.

Ukraine's President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has released a video message on social media.

He says he will continue to defend the country:

"We are all here. Our military are here. Our citizens are here. We are all here defending our independence, our country. And this is how we will continue. Glory to our defenders. Glory to Ukraine."
