Salman Rushdie is likely to lose an eye after a stabbing which required surgery for wounds to his neck and torso.
The 75-year-old author remains on a ventilator following the attack in New York state.
The author suffered death threats from Iran in the 1980s, because of his writing, and the governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, says the stabbing was an attack on free speech.
