A 27-year-old man who grew up in Cork will face trial in Greece today, over charges connected to humanitarian work.
Seán Binder denies charges of people smuggling, membership of a criminal organisation and espionage.
He had travelled to Greece in 2017 to help with the migrant crisis but was arrested in 2018 and spent 100 days in prison.
More than 60 MEPs have written an open letter in support of Mr Binder and his co-defendants.
His mother Fanny believes Seán was arrested to send a message to other aid workers.
"There is no search and rescue any more on the island of Lesbos since they were in pre trial detention.
"They've very much tried to deal with the so called migrant crisis in a way that criminalising young people will deter other people from coming."
