The Taoiseach says climate change is causing greater conflict across the world.
Micheál Martin chaired a debate of the UN Security Council today, where he called climate change the "defining issue of our generation".
He pushed for the council to set up a system for monitoring climate-related conflicts, saying action is urgently needed:
"We have seen how climate change is already contributing to conflict in many parts of the world. In the Horn of Africa, repeated droughts are undermining coping capacities among communities and disrupting livelihoods; armed groups have been able to exploit these precarious conditions for recruitment purposes. The need for action is clear."
