Talks between Government and trade unions on a new public sector pay deal have broken up overnight without agreement.

Unions sources say the discussions continued until the early hours of this morning at the Workplace Relations Commission, however they say there's a significant gap between both sides.

Unions had been pressing for pay rises in or around 7% to compensate for the spiralling cost of living.

The HSE says there are still significant number of over 65s who are yet to receive their booster vaccine.

Health service chiefs are urging everyone who is eligible to get the jab due to the recent increase in the numbers of confirmed cases of COVID-19.

4,702 cases were confirmed on Wednesday, while there were 496 confirmed cases in Irish hospitals as of yesterday morning.

The European Commission is giving an opinion today on whether Ukraine can become a candidate to join the EU.

The decision's being taken ahead of an EU summit on the 23rd and 24th of this month.

It's expected to propose that Ukraine become a formal candidate for membership of the bloc.

It's been confirmed a mistake was made in the Irish version of the Leaving Cert Higher Level Maths Paper 2.

The State Examinations Commission says this will be taken fully into account when marking the work of students.
