Donald Trump says his current trip to Co Clare was planned before criminal proceedings where brought against him.

The trip to Scotland and Ireland is his first abroad since he became the first former US president to face criminal charges.

No travel conditions were placed on him after he pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records in New York in April.

Donald Trump arrived to a bit of fanfare last night as he was greeted by local dancers and musicians when he arrived here in Doonbeg, and the fanfare he was met by reporters as he entered the hotel.

Asked whether he was disrespecting the US courts by going on this trip, he said the visit had been planned before criminal charges were brought against him.

He was also asked about whether or not US companies located in Ireland should pay more tax in America. He said he didn’t want to answer but a lot of people would say yes.

Today, Trump will have a business meeting in the morning before a round of golf, although that may not happen if the West Clare weather doesn’t improve.

He flies back to the US tonight.
