Dr Fionn Rogan from UCC's MaREI Centre was speaking after the government announced a €125 billion Climate Action Plan to cut emissions to net zero by 2050.The plan aims to have 845,000 electric vehicles on the road and half a million homes retrofitted by 2030.The proportion of renewable electricity will increase to 80% by the same year, with farmers, businesses and communities set to benefit from a scheme to allow them to generate their own electricity.Speaking to RedFM News, Dr Fionn Rogan from the Energy Policy and Modelling group at UCC's MaREI Centre outlines how transport is set to change in the next decade:
"In the transport sector, one of the big things that I noticed was the expectation for much more active travels, half a million journeys by 2030 will be from walking and cycling. There's also an expectation that we'll be driving 25% less by 2030 in our petrol and diesel cars. So there's, I think a realisation in the Government and the policy system that technology alone can't reach these targets, we have to look at behaviour you know how much we travel, how much we consume."
MaREI is the SFI Research Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine research and innovation co-ordinated by the Environmental Research Institute (ERI) at University College Cork.
The Centre comprises over 220 researchers focusing on defined global challenges such as the Energy Transition, Climate Action and the Blue Economy.
