The heads of three leading British medical groups have written a joint statement reassuring people that Strep A is common and treatable.
It follows another death from the infection in the UK, bringing the current death toll there to 16 in recent weeks.
In Ireland, one child's death has been linked to the bacteria.
Despite controversy and concern - the open letter advises parents and carers that Strep A is a 'very treatable' infection that is well researched and widely recognised by the medical community.
