The speed at which the Omicron variant of Covid-19 is spreading around the world brings renewed urgency to the need for vaccines to be made more available to poorer countries.

Chief Executive of UNICEF, Peter Power, is warning that unless vaccine equity is addressed, more variants will emerge.

He said a global pandemic needs a global response:

"Well, as we have seen at this new, this highly transmissible Omicron variant is sweeping the world at incredible speeds and it is, yet again, a stark reminder that all countries must be vaccinated, not just a minority of countries. Tis vaccine inequity throughout the world means that newer and unpredictable variants will continue to emerge from unvaccinated countries."
