He passed away with his wife by his side - he'd been ill for some time.
In a career spanning six decades, he sold over 100 million albums worldwide - "Bat Out of Hell" remains one of the best-selling of all time.
Speaking in 2016, he reflected on his life - and said he has no regrets:
"Even when it feels like that, it was totally out of your control. Everything that has gone right or wrong has been a lesson. So you can never change anything."
