The government needs to be confident it has "its eyes on the virus" before easing restrictions.
That's according to the World Health Organisation, which says Ireland must have adequate contact tracing and testing is in place before measures can be relaxed.
Contact tracing is taking approximately six days to complete, while the capacity for testing is at 10,000 per day.
The Chief Medical Officer has indicated he won't be recommending the lifting of restrictions, which are due to expire on Tuesday.
WHO spokesperson Margaret Harris says when they are lifted, it has to be done gently.
"Because people have gone into lockdowns to buy time, now is really the time to get all those things in place before you really ease the restrictions.
"The right way to do it is gently, when you're confident you have got the testing, tracking, your eyes on the virus."
