The World Health Organisation is paying tribute to the healthcare workers who are 'putting their lives at risk' during the pandemic.
The number of cases of coronavirus across the world has risen to almost 2.6 million, while nearly 178,000 people have died.
Healthcare workers account for about a quarter of all cases in Ireland.
And the WHO's director-general, Tedros Ghebreyesus, says all medical staff have been heroic during the crisis.
"Saving lives while putting your lives at risk - there is nothing more blessed than what you are doing.
"Please keep doing what you are doing - from the WHO and the entire world, you have the greatest respect and appreciation."
