The Mayor of Limerick says the laws governing dangerous dog breeds must be revisited as a matter of urgency following the death of a young woman in the county last night

The 23-year-old woman was attacked by a dog at a house close to Ballyneety after 11:30pm and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The house remains sealed off this afternoon and a forensic examination is continuing.

Mayor Gerald Mitchell says the tragedy must serve as a wake-up call

"As mayor of the city and county of Limerick, and on behalf of the people of Limerick,  first of all, I'd like to express my genuine sympathy to all the family, relations and friends, to the local community and the community at large.live quite near the area and am well acquainted with the area. It's shocking news for the area under the circumstance that this lady has died. I think the legislation should be revisited Minister Humphreys made a statement to that effect, this morning"
