The Government has been accused of abandoning an entire generation to the "private rental casino game".

According to the leader of the Labour Party a structural revolution is needed in housing, and the government has run out of ideas.

Ivana Bacik was responding to an ESRI report which showed barely one-third of adults under the age of 40 own a home, compared with 80 per cent of people aged over 40.

Deputy Bacik says more ambitions initiatives are needed to tackle the housing crisis.

"We've seen clear failings in government policy, and we need more ambitious programmes.

"We need greater clarity on how we can deliver, for example through proactive recruitment campaigns for construction workers from abroad, and through a really serious resourcing of the land development agency to ensure it can deliver much needed public homes and land."
