Leaving Cert oral exams won't be taking place before the Easter break for the next three years, as was hoped.

The exams were moved to take place during the holidays in 2022, and the timing will remain until 2027 at least.

That's despite opposition from teachers' unions and student representatives, who had hoped to see it return to pre-Covid placement.

Michael Gillespie, General Secretary of the Teachers Union of Ireland, says teachers, parents and students want more consistency

"Easter can fall anytime between the 22nd of March and the 25th of April. So Easter is not consistent. It was always either the two weeks before Easter or the two weeks after Easter which led to the consistency that it was always the end of of March, early April. During school time, they have the support of their peers, their teachers, also parents and students are telling us, the students need their downtime"
