Man and woman killed in house fire in the city

2 people have died after a house fire on Lower Glanmire Road last night.

Units from Cork City Fire Brigade were alerted to the blaze which took over 3 stories of the home around 11 o'clock last night.

The bodies of a man his 80's and woman in her 70's were removed from the house.

Gardaí say traffic is down to one lane as emergency services are still at the scene and traffic will be heavy during morning rush hour.

Speaking to RedFM News, 2nd Officer with Cork City Fire Brigade Victor Shine says crews tackled a substantial blaze:"

"On arrival the fire was coming out through the roof and the  windows of the front of the building and fire crews then deploy firefighting teams into the building and deployed hydraulic platforms to deal with the fire from the outside. At 2.30am. 2 members of the family were removed from the house deceased unfortunately."

In a statement to RedFM News, Gardai say

"Gardaí in Mayfield are investigating all of the circumstances surrounding the death of two individuals following a fatal house fire in Mayfield, Cork last night, Thursday, April 4th 2024.  
 
At approximately 11:15pm Gardaí and Fire Services were alerted to a house fire on Lower Glanmire Road, Mayfield.  The fire was brought under control by Fire Services and the bodies of a man in his 80s and female in her 70s were recovered from inside the house.

Investigating Gardaí have cordoned off the scene as they work to determine the cause of the fire. Both bodies have been transported to the Mortuary at Cork University Hospital for post-mortem examinations. The Cork City Coroner has been informed, and the results of the post-mortems, along with a technical examination of the scene, will guide the ongoing Garda investigation.

Traffic restrictions are currently in effect at the scene on Lower Glanmire Road, with traffic reduced to one lane. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes.
