The alarm was raised at Tralee Bay yesterday at around 10.30am when clothes were spotted on a beach, but no swimmer in sight.
Rescue teams carried out searches throughout the day, before a man was spotted in the sea around 5 kilometres from Castlegregory.
He was taken from the water and brought to University Hospital Kerry where he was treated for hypothermia.
