Media rules and regulations should be strengthened to tackle 'disinformation and harmful clickbait content'.
That's according to a new report from the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Integration.
The spread of disinformation has come into the spotlight, following the recent Dublin riots, which are said to have been provoked by far-right groups on social media.
Security Analyst, Tom Clonan says people within these groups know how to use the algorithm to promote harmful content:
"They know that conflict and hate speech drive a lot of traffic, get a lot of traction, and with that comes revenues of which those platforms get about 30% of the cut. So basically, what the committee is recommending is that those social media companies, which are headquartered in Dublin, that they basically sign up to a code of practice where they more proactively curb this hate speech and disinformation".
