The grand-niece of Michael Collins says the new statue of him in the city is on the ground because he was always on the same level as the people.

Hundreds are still gathered on Grand Parade for the statue unveiling of the revolutionary figure from Béal na Bláth.

Sculptor, Kevin Holland was commissioned to create the near life size statue of Michael Collins standing with his bike.

Speaking to RedFM News, Michael Collins’ grand-neice, Fidelma Collins says she didn't want the statue to be elevated:

"Well Michael Collins is a national hero, but he's a Cork man, and as you can see the the statue is at ground level because we didn't want him up on a high plinth because he's a man for the people, and we want people  on ground level so they can stop and say hello to him"
