The Environment Minister says lives will be saved with the introduction of a nationwide smoky coal ban.

It's currently in place in towns and cities with large populations but will be extended across the country next year.

Tighter rules will also be introduced for the selling and distribution of solid fuels like wet wood and turf.

Independent TD for Kerry Michael Healy-Rae is highly critical of the plan.

"Why in the name of God would people along the west coast of Ireland, where there's hurricanes and wind, and plenty of air, and plenty of breezes blowing - why would we need to be worried about the little bit of smoke coming out of a small fire burning a bit of solid fuel be it timber or turf - which is our tradition, which is our right?"
