Ministers are requesting additional information on the status of Covid-19 hospital patients.
The Irish Independent reports a letter has gone to NPHET to request that only people who are in hospital because of the virus, and not those who happened to test positive in entry should be counted.
123 people are being treated in hospitals according to latest figures, which is 21% higher than last week.
Trinity College Associate Professor Tomás Ryan says it's vital to control the virus ahead of schools reopening in September.
"This may be our last opportunity in the summer to start to take control of our situation so that we don't have a peak of infections that coincides with the reopening schools.
"None of our children have been vaccinated - none of our children will be vaccinated by September."
