423 motorists were caught speeding during National Slow Down Day yesterday.
Yesterday marked the first day of action by Gardaí targeting speed offences in 2024.
A driver on the on the N25 at Castleredmond in Midleton , was clocked doing 95 km/h in a 80 km/h.
while another on the M8 at Riverstown in Glanmire did 118 km/h in a 100k Zone.
Inspector for Roads Policing Paul Donohoe says distraction is also a major problem:
"Drink and drug driving is another major thing. Mobile phone phone distracted driving distracted. I think mobile phones is a real problem. People are talking away why phones worse again, people looking at mobile phones, reading messages and social media while driving and we get an awful lot of texts of people driving holding mobile phones, but it is a serious problem that people need to stop."
