Netflix have acquired the rights of the entire Roald Dahl back catalogue from the author's family.
The streaming service will now own films such as Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and THE BFG meaning they will control movie and TV publishing rights and receive royalties. Netflix will also facilitate scope for different formats for the stories including spin off games, stage shows and other live events related to the author's famous books.
The sum for the deal is undisclosed and will not be revealed by either side although reports suggest the figure could be up to $1 billion.
The Roald Dahl Story Company had been run by Dahl's grandson Luke Kelly. Kelly and Netflix boss Ted Sarandos released a joint statement to confirm the agreement saying they were "joining forces to bring some of the world's most loved stories to current and future fans in creative new ways".
There are already plans in place to create 19 different productions on various platforms including two animated series from director Taika Waititi, one based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the other on Willy Wonka's Oompa Loompas. Also in the works s an adaptation of the popular Tim Minchin's 'Matilda The Musical' which has ran on Broadway and the West End.
Netflix announced the news of the deal on their social media platforms using the Golden Ticket from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
