Cathal Crotty is no longer a member of the Defence Forces as of today.
He was convicted last month of a vicious assault on Natasha O'Brien in Limerick City on May 29th of 2022.
He received a fully suspended sentence which the DPP is in the process of appealing.
Michael O'Toole, Crime and Defence Editor at the Irish Daily Star, says the Defence Forces moved as quickly as regulations would allow:
"Had to start handing back his gear, he had to be paraded in front of his commanding officer, which was the start of the process, and then he had to do medical tests, which delayed things. So it was expected to be late last week, but on Monday, news came through that everything had been sorted, all the "t's" had been crossed and the "i's" had been dotted and as of one minute past midnight, this morning, Thursday, he's no longer a member of the Defence Forces"
