Rapper Lil Wayne has thanked former US President Donald Trump for his pardon.

Trump pardoned over 100 people on his final full day in office including Lil Wayne, Kodak Black, his former advisor Steve Bannan and Republican Party fundraiser Elliot Broidy.

Lil Wayne, whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter, took to Twitter to express his gratitude to Trump for pardoning him of weapon charges.

The rapper admitted to the charge in December and was due to be sentenced in a few weeks time. Lil Wayne, who is a convicted felon, was facing up to 10 years in prison for the weapon charges but now will walk free after Trump's absolution.

In his message to the former President, the hip hop star said "I want to thank President Trump for recognising that I have so much more to give to my family, my art and my community."
