A smaller version of Electric Picnic could still go ahead this year, according to Fianna Fáil's spokesperson for the arts.
Laois County Council yesterday refused to give the organisers a licence to hold the music festival in Stradbally next month.
The local authority says it's due to public health advice, which limits these events to 500 people.
Fianna Fáil TD Niamh Smyth hopes a compromise can be reached.
"I know that the organisers of Electric Picnic had originally planned for 70,000 participants.
"They are phenomenal numbers considering we are in a global pandemic and we're not out of the woods yet.
"I would hope there is room for manoeuvre there in terms of the authorities and what they will allow and the numbers that can be allowed.
"I would hope this would not be the end of the dream to see Electric Picnic happening in this country this year."
