The Road Safety Authority says there has been a worrying increase in road deaths compared to the same period last year.

Eighteen people have died on Irish roads this month, bringing the total so far this year to 47.

There were no road deaths in Cork in January, however 8 road users have died on Cork roads since the 10th of February.

Liz O'Donnell, from the RSA, says people also need to think of the burden accidents place on the health service at this time of crisis.

"It's the same kind of behaviours - speeding, drink driving, a lack of respect for other road users.

"We would be asking people to slow down - remember you have a personal responsibility for your behaviour on the road.

"We really want to stem this tide of death on our roads - we don't need any more burden on our hospitals."
