According to the National Safeguarding Office, 53 involved people over the age of 80.
There were also nearly 3,000 complaints of physical abuse - either in the health service or in the community.
Vivian Guerin, the chairman of the Irish Association of Social Workers, says the figures are very concerning:
"We have to remember first of all that behind all of these statistics is a human being and a collection of human beings. It's absolutely appalling that that abuse takes place, but it's it's a real concern for the Irish Association of Social Workers. That, that type of abuse and neglect could go on to any degree but to a greater degree where it's hidden away because of lockdowns on the pandemic."
