Sinn Fein Education Spokesperson Donnchadh O'Laoghaire wants to prioritise written exams for the class of 2021

The Cork South-Central TD has criticised the lack of clarity and clear contingency plans from the Department of Education when it comes to next year's state exams.

He told RedFM News that no plans have been communicated by the Government for students who might be self-isolating during oral or written exams due to Covid-19.

6th year students are currently balancing an increased workload in the form of class tests and continuous assessment, with no indication on whether the results of this work will go towards their final Leaving Cert grades.

Speaking to RedFM News, Donnchadh O'Laoghaire says the environment of over-assesment in secondary schools needs to be curbed:

'I think we need to rule out the calculated grades as well, it didn't work last year. The fact that people think it's a possibility is leading to this over assessment at this point in time, I think. So I think the minister needs to clearly take that off the table, any contingency that's going to be there she needs to outline it, and she needs to make it very clear.'
