Sinn Féin's Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire says 6th year students "deserve clarity" regarding the State exams as the Department of Education has announced further stakeholder discussions
are to take place in the coming days.
The Department described yesterday's meeting as a "positive and collaborative engagement" and said the Minister is very aware of the disruption experienced by students who are due to sit the Leaving Cert this year
Yesterday Leaving Cert students at the Patrician Academy in Mallow staged a walk out as they called for the implementation of a hybrid version of the State Exams
Speaking to RedFM News Sinn Fein's Donnchadh O'Laoghaire says at this stage students deserve to know what's happening with their exams in June:
"I think a lot of students would have expected an answer out of yesterday's meeting, that didn't happen, I regret that. I hope that they get clarity as soon as possible, in my view, when you take into consideration that they missed over two months of fifth year, that a lot of students have missed time with self isolation not only themselves but their teachers as well. And all the stress of the pandemic, I think a hybrid, a choice between written exams for those who want them and calculated grades or accredited grades. For those who want them are a combination of both. I think that is a serious thing given the circumstances they've faced."
