An addiction counsellor says the government should be actively seeking out problem gamblers and offering them help.
It comes as the National Lottery annual report shows over a €1 billion worth of tickets were sold in 2021.
That's the first time the figure has exceeded 1 billion, an increase of about 130 million year on year.
Former Gaelic footballer and addiction counsellor, Oisin McConville, says more regulation is urgently needed on all gambling products:
"To acknowledge the fact that there's a lot of people being helped by the offshoot of the lottery, but there also are a lot of people who are struggling, so that should be acknowledged. I think it needs to be regulated more who's playing the National Lottery, who's playing excessively, and are we actively seeking out those people and offering them somehow."
