Almost one in four family carers have had to cut back on essentials such as food and heating due to financial struggles.
That's one of the findings of a major study by Family Carers Ireland, which says its members need to receive fair compensation for the care they provide.
68 percent say they're experiencing financial distress while 9 percent are relying on charities to feed their families.
The group's calling on the government to undertake an urgent review of the Carer's Allowance and increase it to 325 euro a week.
