Gardaí have issued an appeal for road users to refrain from driving under the influence of drink or drugs this Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

55 people lost their lives on Irish roads so far this year including four people here in Cork

Nineteen people have already been arrested for being under the influence of drink or drugs in the first 24 hours of the Garda road safety campaign.

Sergeant Gavin Coleman from the Roads Policing Division says all motorists have a responsibility this weekend

"So our appeal over this weekend to drivers is to please don't drink, or use drugs while driving slow down and stay within the speed limit. And don't let anything distract you while you're driving, such as use of your mobile phones. We all have a responsibility to keep our roads safe"
