The President of the Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland says motions for industrial action at their annual delegate conference this week are about the 'trajectory of their profession'.
All of the main teaching unions are holding their annual conferences this week with the issue of pay set to dominate the proceedings.
The INTO, TUI and ASTI all say the current cost of living crisis is hitting teachers.
ASTI President Eamon Dennehy says teachers wages could be 'disastrous' for the education system.
"It's not seen as attractive as it used to be.
"There are now problems filling jobs in schools.
"The status of the job, and the way it is perceived as being a good job is slipping, and that is only going to be disastrous for our education system."
