Ivana Bacik is the favourite to become the next leader of the Labour Party.
Alan Kelly resigned last night after accepting that his parliamentary party no longer had confidence in him.
Ray Kavanagh is a former General Secretary of the Labour Party and says the move is at odds with the party's grassroots members who voted for Alan Kelly only two years ago.
"The time was Covid time, when the whole country and the government was focussed on Covid and party politics were in effect suspended.
"Now that it's ending he's just getting into his stride, and the idea that he should resign before he has really had a chance to implement his policies and his ideas is quite unacceptable - it's horrifying really to tell you the truth."
