People are being warned of the dangers of eating undercooked food as households across the country are expected to dust down the barbeque over the weekend.

Safe Food is advising using a meat thermometer to ensure food is properly cooked.

A reading of 75 degrees Celsius for meat is the benchmark for it to be safe.

Communications Manager with Safe Food Dermot Moriarty says its just as important to store cold food properly, as it too can cause problems.

"Keep food in the fridge until you need them - they're very sensitive to heat.

"Because it's so warm, keep them in the fridge until you need them and take them out, don't leave them sitting out in the sun.

"That's just to ensure that you keep them safe from bacteria that will grow in that heat, and being in direct sunlight."
