The most sensitive role within An Garda Síochána should not be given to a Canadian - according to one TD.
Following failed attempts to fill the role of deputy commissioner for policing and security, the position will be given to Deputy Commissioner Shawna Coxon on a double-jobbing basis.
The former deputy police chief in Toronto already oversees strategy, governance and performance in the Gardaí.
However, independent TD and former Army Ranger, Cathal Berry says the role must be filled by an Irish person:
"It's the same reason why Irish diplomats must be Irish citizens. You're dealing with very, very sensitive information of a national security nature. Your first loyalty must be to Ireland, and even the perception of having a second loyalty is just not good enough from an intelligence perspective".
