Cabinet ministers have approved a draft plan, that 'paves the way' for the introduction of a gambling regulator.
It includes a ban on advertising between 5am on 9pm on television, radio, as well as a ban on gambling ads on social media.
Under the plans, any company operating without a gambling license, could face up to 8 years in prison.
Junior Minister at the Department of Justice James Browne outlines the details around advertising:
"A watershed will be put in place so you won't be allowed to advertise on television or radio between the hours of 5:30am on to 9pm. Also on social media, you will not receive gambling ads they are prohibited unless you opt into them. So that's why we're taking a very strict approach on advertising."
