Cabinet Ministers will agree to a new 2% cap on rent increases in rent pressure zones this morning.
Minister Darragh O'Brien changed the rules earlier this year to link rent hikes to inflation.
But with a spike in inflation leading to higher rents, the Housing Minister now intends to cap any increases in those areas at 2 per cent.
Speaking in the Seanad, Labour's Rebecca Moynihan says we need an immediate rent freeze.
"To stabilise the rental market and bring rents back in line with wages, but we also need proper enforcement of this.
"One of the reasons are not reporting it to the Residential Tenancies Board as they're afraid of losing their home.
"And why is that? Because we have some of the worst tenancy rights in Europe."
