Ireland should follow Europe's lead and introduce free public transport.
It comes after significant discounts on buses and trains in Germany saw nearly two million tonnes of savings in carbon emissions.
While in Spain most train journeys will be free from September.
Solidarity TD, Mick Barry, says our 20 per cent reduction in fares is puny in comparison.
"The case for making public transport free is overwhelming, both from a cost of living point of view and from an environmental point of view.
"What has happened in Germany over the summer points clearly to the benefit of this being done in every corner of Europe from one end of the year to the next."
