A group representing universities wants to see the Leaving Cert exams held in May next year.
The Irish Universities Association says the State exams and results are too late to allow colleges and first year students to prepare for the new academic year.
This year's Leaving Cert results will be released on Friday 2nd of September - almost three weeks later compared to pre-Covid times.
But Director General of the Irish Universities Association, Jim Miley, says the exams and results were always too late.
"We think even in a normal year that the exams are too late, they allow no room for disruption which we've seen again this year.
"We're saying bring them forward, perhaps on a staggered basis, perhaps on a staggered basis for a start, perhaps by a couple of weeks but ultimately by about a month.
"That requires all sides to sit down and discuss how to make that happen, but we're asking that the Minister and the government will start that process now so that we make the first move in 2023."
