There is a call for a ban on mobile phones in all primary school classrooms to be implemented right across the country.
Fine Gael Senator Mary Seery Kearney says the proposal is inspired by similar localised measures in place in schools in Wicklow and Kerry.
A similar ban has been introduced in the Netherlands in recent days, with their education minister saying phones "do not belong in the classroom".
Senator Seery Kearney says buy-in by all stakeholders is needed:
"If parents and schools work together, then you will have the situation where everybody is on the same page. No child feels isolated by not having a mobile phone because the policy is that you can't have one".
