Legislation needs to be updated in order to make spiking a specific criminal offence.
The Labour Party is seeking to make amendments to the Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill to allow such a move.
The Party's Spokesperson on Justice said there was a need for a specific offence of spiking given the recently reported rise in cases.
Aodhan Ó Ríordáin said the practice needs to be tackled with tougher laws.
"It is a practice that has gone on for quite a period of time, there's suggestions that after COVID It was on the increase.
"But even if it wasn't very, very prevalent, one of these instances, in any circumstance is one too many, and we need to have a proper conversation about dealing with it.
"We can't deal with us effectively if it doesn't have a standard on designation within our within our criminal legislation."
