There are calls for the passport offices in Cork and Dublin to reopen immediately, to try to address lengthy backlogs.
The Irish Travel Agents Association says the measure's needed - as current delays are unacceptable.
It says people are being forced to cancel their holidays, as many passport applications are taking at least eight weeks to process.
The association wants the backlog cleared immediately, but Padraig Ó Ceidigh, the founder of Aer Lingus Regional, says that's not possible.
"The passport office have to do a fair amount of due diligence to make sure the passport they are issuing is valid.
"Over 70% of new passports are being issued to people from Northern Ireland and the UK, and that obviously causes some extra complications for the passport office.
"Also it's my understanding that up to 50% of recent passport applications have been incomplete."
